[Maximize|Optimize[ Your Safety With A GPS Device
Throughout the beginning of the 1970s, the Golan Heights were in Israel’s possession for a number years. Day trips were rising in popularity, which was when my family chose to rent a car to see this attractive location. If only GPS technology had been available then!.
Unfortunately we got lost; extremely lost. Night set in, we were low on gas, eight of us, clearly Jewish, crammed into a rental car with no idea where we were. Eventually we located a small Arab town, evidently part of Syria not too long ago. Yet if we were aware of its existence more than likely we would have reached for our pepper spray guns.
Fortunately, the people of the town were incredibly helpful, kind and concerned. Widely known, that wasn’t necessarily the case in those days. They opened up the only gas station in town, fueled us up, and gave us food, not to mention very good directions. The situation could have been much worse. And yet we were extremely lucky. Today, no one has to face such a situation; if they have their GPS.
How Does a GPS Operate?
Global Positioning System satellites revolve overhead, beaming down signals to equipment on the ground such as a vehicle installed GPS receiver. The receivers are totally submissive, as they cannot transmit. By recognizing which satellite is providing which signal, the unit triangulates its relative position. When mixed with the mapping software it can inform you with realistic accuracy, where you are positioned at any moment.
Employing a GPS While Traveling
If you are hesitant about getting a GPS and you like to take road trips regularly, there are several reasons why you should have one along, even if you don’t use it much.
Firstly: You are more than likely going to end up in an area you are not familiar with. However this is typically the point when on a road trip. Although with a GPS you will definitely arrive at your target, even if this includes arriving at night, and you have to also take a number of odd turns in the process.
Secondly: You won’t be asked to pull over to take out a road map, to reread on a constant basis. Your GPS should be able to provide commands out loud, which means you can keep your eyes on the road while driving. Just program the address you want to reach and go – and if the voice is bothering you, turn it down until you near your destination.
Thirdly: You will stop making any wrong turns ultimately ending up in a location where you will instantly think to yourself – “why didn’t I buy a tazer?”.
Easy to install, helpful to have along, GPS devices have made travel safer and more accurate – and they just keep getting better.
